1. 1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Who is meant by “husbands”?

1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)

7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Just as the “wives” of 1 Peter 3:1, these men are among the “elect exiles” to whom Peter is writing (1 Peter 1:1). So they too are “born again” and possess a “living hope,” an inheritance…kept in heaven” for them (1 Peter 1:3–4). They too are seen in their community as “sojourners and exiles,” and so need to make a deliberate point of “keeping their conduct among the Gentiles honorable” (1 Peter 2:11–12).
