All Peter’s readers were to “honor everyone” (1 Peter 2:17), that is, extend value to, esteem, respect the other—irrespective of creed, race, gender, etc. This instruction pertains also to husbands in relation to their wives, specifically in the Graeco-Roman context where wives were often treated as mere objects.
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
