Exodus 3:2–5 (ESV)

2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.

God is not far away. He is with us (see Exodus 3:12). In Christ, he is our Father who cares for us, better than any human father can (Matthew 7:9–11). At the same time, he is our Father in heaven, that is, in heavenly majesty. Our relationship with him is one of intimacy and awe. God said, I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit (Isaiah 57:15). To approach God without respect is playing with fire. We cannot live without fire, but at the same time we teach the children to be careful with fire. In the same way, we need the Lord, but we only can be in his presence with respect. Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:28–29).
