1. 1 Thessalonians 2:15 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

To whom does all mankind refer?

1 Thessalonians 2:15 (ESV)

15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind

The use of all in all mankind may sound like a hyperbole which should not be taken literally.1 However, Paul often uses all to indicate that he has both Jews and Gentiles in view (e.g., Romans 3:23; Romans 11:32), and it is likely that he has the same idea in mind here. In other words, he is emphasizing that the Jews of whom he is speaking not only opposed the Jewish disciples of Jesus in Judea, but also opposed Gentile disciples in other regions.2
