1 John 1:4 (ESV)

4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

The true joy of faith has everything to do with Christ—with Jesus Christ, as the Spirit presents him to us in the Bible, as we read and learn of him in God’s own Word. The real joy of faith is anchored in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who teaches us to know God as he is. Here are some more passages that deal with that joy which we may really know through faith in Christ.

  • John 15:9–11: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

  • Philippians 4:4: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

  • 1 Peter 1:8–9: Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
