The repetition in Malachi 2:16 of the warning already stated in Malachi 2:15 serves to underline the severity of the sin that must be guarded against. The repetition emphasises the warning. The man who unjustly divorces his wife will not only inflict great injustice and injury upon his wife. He will afflict his own spirit. His conscience will accuse him, and his guilt will weigh down his own heart. He will rob himself of the certainty of God’s favour and blessing.
16 “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
