1 On the eighth day Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel,

Verse 1 serves as the transition from chapter 8 to chapter 9. In Leviticus 8:1–36, Aaron and his sons were commanded to remain in the tent of meeting for seven days. Exactly after a week of purification, Aaron and the priests begin their ministry. The ministry of the priesthood began with various sacrifices. First, Aaron is to bring a bull calf. It is sacrificed in Leviticus 9:8–11. Second, Aaron he is to fetch a ram. It is offered in Leviticus 9:12–14. Third, the Israelites are to bring a goat and burnt offerings. These are offered in Leviticus 9:15–17. Finally, the ox and ram brought in Leviticus 9:4 are sacrificed on the altar in Leviticus 9:18–21.
