Why did the people accuse Stephen of blasphemy?

Acts 6:11 (ESV)

11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

The men who were debating with Stephen in the synagogue were unwilling to submit to his interpretation. They were unable to provide a coherent explanation as to why he was wrong and so they resorted to underhanded tactics.1 They attempted to discredit Stephen by inventing a rumour.
