In what sense were the witnesses against Stephen false?

Acts 6:13 (ESV)

13 and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law,

At the time, the witnesses would have most certainly presented themselves as being credible. However, they were false, because they twisted Stephen’s words in order to accuse him of a sin which he had not committed. Luke specifically highlights their deceitful nature in order to underscore the injustice that was about to take place.1
