Man without God praises what he pursues and has obtained through crime. In Deuteronomy 29:18–19 we read about someone who is in danger of losing faith and wants to worship other gods “lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.
This will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike.” And when he has become rich by his greed, he curses and despises the Lord. His desires are his god. When he has reached his goal—to be rich—he distances himself mockingly from the Lord; the Lord means nothing to him! In his godless pride he thinks, He will not call to account.
It can also be translated this way, I do not investigate; I ask myself no questions.
This is what he thinks continually, There is no God.
In Genesis 3:1–7 this misery already started: Adam and Eve acted like Satan, and with this they denied the power or presence of God. Because the godless, proud man has progressed so much, God means ever less to him. He enjoys his riches at the cost of the weak. They will not drag him to court. And God does not intervene either, so he is not there. Therefore, he can do what he wants at the cost of weak fellow men.
3 For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD.
