Psalm 10:15–16 (ESV)

15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none.

Break the power of the godless criminal. Let him give account of his wickedness. Make sure that all that is evil is stopped. The one who prays wants the full justice of the Lord. The Lord, who is Judge, can make that happen.

Again, we hear a confession: the Lord is King for ever and ever. The kingship of God is without end. The word ever is mentioned twice to indicate the infinity. In Psalm 29:10 we also read: The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. Over against so many earthly kings who lose their power after a while, God is King forever. The opponents who attack and kill the weak will lose their power at some point. God is King for eternity; the kingship of God will last forever. That is another confession which seems to clash with the facts of that moment. Again, it is all about faith.

It is in that kingship where the nations (enemies, heathens) perish from his land. The ending of the nature psalm (Psalm 104:35) sounds the same: Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! God’s kingdom wants to make a clean sweep. Only God’s justice will triumph. And that takes place thanks to Golgotha—at the place where God’s justice was most deeply damaged, where the holy Son of God calls out, as we read in Mark 15:33–34: “And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? What a miracle from God! What a plan to save us! The Son sacrificed himself, and with that, mankind is reconciled with God. All this originated from the love we read about in John 3:16.

Multiple times, Scripture speaks about the end of evil and injustice. In its place the knowing of the Lord has come, which entails completely living from and for him.

  • In Isaiah 11:9 we read: They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

  • In Habakkuk 2:14 we read: For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Here Habakkuk also speaks about knowing the Lord over against the shedding of blood and the administering of poison.

  • In Revelation, we read of praising God’s kingship, in Revelation 11:17: “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.”
