Why does Luke mention Saul?

Acts 7:58 (ESV)

58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

Saul is most likely mentioned to prepare readers to learn more about him at a later stage. Identified as a young man, he would be between eighteen and thirty years of age.1 He was most likely a member of the Sanhedrin at this point in time (see Acts 26:10).2
