What was typical of a threshold?

Zephaniah 2:14 (ESV)

14 Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of beasts; even the owl and the hedgehog shall lodge in her capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare.

It was common for a threshold or doorway to have keepers or guards to maintain it night and day (2 Kings 12:9; 2 Kings 22:4; 2 Kings 23:4; 1 Chronicles 9:19; Esther 2:21; Esther 6:2; Jeremiah 35:4). But now what guards the doorway is rubble. The community has been devastated.1
