What does the verb “to testify” mean?

1 John 1:2 (ESV)

2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us

The word comes from the Greek martyreo. It means “to bear witness” or “to affirm what was seen or heard.” Originally this term was used in the courts of law, to express the giving of testimony about that which someone has seen.1
