Peter had used the same word in 1 Peter 1:3 to describe the vision the Christian sees as a result of being born again (and so escaping the narrow, this-worldly view of reality that unborns see). That vision is the imperishable inheritance (1 Peter 1:4) that will be theirs on the day of Christ’s return (1 Peter 1:13). So glorious is this hope that no loss of freedom, property, reputation, etc., can dent the joy of its expectation. So doing good to others as God has done good to us marks the Christian even in the face of scorn.
