1. 1 Peter 3:22 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does Peter here make reference to Jesus' sitting “at the right hand of God”?

1 Peter 3:22 (ESV)

22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

The right hand is the place of honour (1 Kings 2:19). David had also prophesied that the Lord God would instruct Jesus to sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool (Psalm 110:1). On the day of Pentecost, Peter quoted that very text and added the explanation that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified (Acts 2:34ff). With his present reference to the same concept, Peter presses upon his readers how effective Jesus’ suffering was in terms of its accomplishments. Jesus’ enemies—those now instigating unjust suffering upon the saints—are soundly defeated!
