What was the ephod to be worn in God’s presence?

1 Samuel 2:28 (ESV)

28 Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel.

The ephod in view is that which was worn by the high priest (see Exodus 29:5–30; Leviticus 8:7). This included the jewelled breastplate and the Urim and Tummim.1
