Genesis 2:1 (ESV)

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

In Genesis 2:1–3 we find the conclusion of the message that the Lord made the earth habitable for man in six days. The words, the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, point to the entire creation. The host represents everything the Lord made outside the heavens and the earth: the entire universe that seems immeasurable even to people who have the most modern equipment. It is all God’s work. Here God’s glory and splendour shine forth magnificently. That is how great he is!

The word finished shows that God has really completed his work of creation. The creation of man represented the completion of God’s work of creation. Thus, the creation was in every way as the Lord desired it to be. With his work of creation his purpose was accomplished.
