The Lord instructs Adam to give names to all the animals. The instruction shows that man occupies a unique place in God’s creation. You see here that only man is God’s image bearer. He is above the animals and therefore is given the command to give the animals names. The Lord has given understanding and wisdom to the man to perceive the animals and to give them the right names. Having read this, we again should note the ultimate purpose as to why the Lord brought the animals to Adam. It was with a view to awaken in Adam the desire for a helper who would suit him. Adam saw that each animal came as a pair: male and female together. There was a very special relationship between two animals of the same kind. They were not alone. They had a companion with whom they could share their existence. Adam did not have such a companion yet. There was no creature that could be a helper that would fit him.
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
