1. Exposition

What is the force of the term “therefore”?

1 Peter 4:7 (ESV)

7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

The fact that Peter and his readers are living in the period of history when the Father could at any moment send the Son to judge the living and the dead raises the suspense for each person and the need for preparedness. Conduct befitting Christ’s imminent return includes the series of instructions that follow his “therefore” (in 1 Peter 4:7–11). Peter has learned from Jesus himself that such conduct befits those expecting the Master at any time (Matthew 24:45–47).
