This verse goes even deeper into the mystery of Jesus’ humiliation. He became obedient to the point of death. Jesus humbled himself voluntarily, and at the same time it was also a command of God, to which he obeyed to the point of death—death on the cross.
The crucifixion was a Roman punishment. The Jews loathed it, not only because it was a cruel and shameful punishment, but also because hanging on a tree meant being cursed by God (see Deuteronomy 21:22–23; cf. 1 Corinthians 1:23, Galatians 3:13, and Hebrews 12:2).
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
