The name could be written on two places (on his robe as well as on his thigh) or on one place (on his robe, that is, on his thigh); the Greek could go either way. The thigh was commonly the place where a soldier had his sword (Exodus 32:27; Judges 3:16, Judges 3:21). In Jesus’ case the sword came from his mouth (Revelation 19:15). Because he fought so successfully using the sword of his mouth, and even now was carrying out God’s crushing judgment over his enemies, his true identity could be rightly inscribed on the very place where the sword normally hung.
16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
