To profane is to treat what was holy to the Lord in an improper way, defiling the sanctuary of the Lord. In the case of the priests of the day, they had allowed and encouraged the introduction of pagan practices into the temple of the Lord under the kings Manasseh and Amon (2 Kings 23:4–20).
