James 1:22–25 (ESV)

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

If in fact, hearers are to be practical hearers, what does that say about the preaching? We are to be practical preachers, aren't we? We have not done our job if we stop at exposition, regardless of how clear, wonderful, and interesting it is. If God wants his people to be effectual doers, part of our duty as preachers is to show them how to be effectual doers. To go from the exposition to the application. To show how we are to think, how we are to respond, and how we are to live in light of the truths of this text of Scripture. If you are not a practical preacher, you will not produce practical hearers. And in one sense then, their blood will be upon your hands for not completely fulfilling your task. And so…each of us needs to be constantly recommitted to be practical instructors.1
