1. 1 Samuel 8:8 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why did the LORD say that Israel’s request for a king is equivalent to serving other gods?

1 Samuel 8:8 (ESV)

8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.

If the heart of idolatry is to put your trust in something or someone other than God, then Israel’s confidence in an earthly king, like the nations, is an example thereof. Since Israel is moving their trust from the Lord and his promises to a human individual, they are forsaking the Lord to serve an idol.
