Mizpah was situated in the central portion of the land of the tribe of Benjamin, north of Jerusalem, not far from the border of the former ten tribe kingdom. Gedaliah would have done his work, starting from Mizpah. Four army commanders with their soldiers went to Gedaliah.
These remainders of the Judean army had hidden themselves (see Jeremiah 40:7–8) and had so far been successful to stay out of the hands of the Chaldeans. The big difference between Gedaliah and the soldiers is their position toward the king of Babylon.
23 Now when all the captains and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah governor, they came with their men to Gedaliah at Mizpah, namely, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite.
