Joshua 5:13–6:27 (ESV)

13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

Joshua 5:13 – 6:27 contains dialogue (speeches from the Lord to Joshua as well as from Joshua to the people of Israel) and historical narrative (written accounts of what the people did).

Joshua 5:13 – 6:27 can be divided into three episodes:

  • A meeting with the commander of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:13 – 6:5)

  • The march around Jericho and the destruction of the city (Joshua 6:6–21)

  • The rescue of Rahab and the curse on Jericho (Joshua 6:22–27)
