The main purpose of these laws is to impress upon the minds of the Israelites the holy nature of God. Because the Lord is holy, the nation is called to reflect his holiness. The Hebrews were to be distinct from the world around them. In Acts 10:10–16, the dietary laws are abrogated for the people of God. These dietary laws are no longer binding because the covenant is no longer centred on a physical nation (Israel), but on all who believe in Christ. The principle of reflecting the Lord’s holiness, however, still continues. Jesus once said, “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person” (Matthew 15:11). Later he goes on to explain, “Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person” (Matthew 15:17–18). While the dietary laws are no longer binding, the Christian is called to positively reflect God’s holiness in their hearts, the place from which all things flow.
