Why were the people commanded to be silent during the march around the city?
Joshua 6:10 (ESV)
10But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
The command for the people to be silent emphasizes the solemnity of the coming destruction of Jericho,1 and that the victory would be accomplished by the Lord (not Israel).2
10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
