1. Revelation 20:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why did God ordain that Satan “must be released for a little while”?

Revelation 20:3 (ESV)

3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

The reason for his brief release is provided in Revelation 20:8. At this point John simply mentions the fact of the release without elaborating. That is because John’s eye spotted another development in heaven that rivetted his attention. The Holy Spirit would have us focus on the “thrones” John saw before we explore further the matter of Satan’s release. The implication is that the thrones receive priority over the devil’s freedom.
