The goal of your sermon must be to show how God has been faithful to us, and what response the Lord is calling us to. For Joshua 7:1–26, this will involve explaining the Lord’s faithfulness to the covenant he made with Abraham and Moses. He is bringing his people into the land of promise, and he is blessing them with victory when they are obedient (Joshua 6:1–27) and cursing them with defeat when they are disobedient (Joshua 7:1–26). In both the blessings and the curses he is showing himself to be faithful to his promises. In response to God’s faithfulness, he calls us to obey him and to confess our sins.
1 But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel.
