Psalm 44:12 (ESV)

12 You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them.

You have sold your people for next to nothing. You did not raise the price. You acted with your people as if they were worth nothing. Thus, the enemy strikes for a good bargain. All the while we are the apple of your eye (Psalm 44:3). What a bitter experience. What a disillusionment and deep disappointment. Just like that—sold. These are the thoughts of the author.

What a contradiction with Psalm 44:4 where he speaks of ordaining salvation for Jacob. God’s people are often called Jacob, for example in Deuteronomy 32:10, He found him [Jacob] in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. This illustrates the love and care back then. This stands in strong contrast to what we read here.
