The changing of Jacob’s name to Israel is itself significant (Genesis 32:28; Genesis 35:10), and is specifically referred to on occasion (1 Kings 18:31; 2 Kings 17:34). The name “Jacob” means “deceiver.” The name “Israel,” however, refers to Jacob’s persistent struggle with God to receive God’s blessing. Nevertheless, without the specific reference to the name change, it is probably used here simply as another way of referring to God’s chosen people, as occurs very often, without special significance.
