The food offerings which the people brought to the temple were given to the priests on duty in the temple. As mentioned previously, the people’s failure to bring in their tithes meant that the priestly service in the temple ceased, since the priests needed to return to their own villages and fields to supply their own needs (Nehemiah 13:10)
10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
