Differences between Malachi 1:6—2:9 and 3:6–12

Malachi 3:6–12 (ESV)

6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Although this fifth disputation is like the second in many ways (Malachi 1:6 – 2:9), Douglas Stuart highlights some important differences. The second focuses on the priests, the fifth does not even mention them. The second warns of the turning of blessings into curses; the fifth promises blessing instead of curse. The second is about the inadequate quality of animal offerings; the fifth about inadequate quantity of the tithe. The second warns the priests of judgment for disobedience; the fifth invites the nation to obey and witness the generous benefits of obedience. The second is about worship; the fifth is about temple support.1
