It is important to know the location of Jesus’ ministry in order to understand the theme of this passage. In the preceding chapters Jesus’s ministry focused on the surroundings of the Sea of Galilee. His hometown of Nazareth is located close to the Sea of Galilee. That is why he already had an encounter with his family previously, when they came to see him and they believed that He is out of his mind
(see Mark 3:21). This foreshadows what Jesus will face when coming to his hometown. Furthermore, the distinction between Jesus’ rejection by the people of Nazareth compared to the faith of Jairus and the woman in the immediate context before this passage (see Mark 5:21–43) is another key element to observe when understanding why Jesus marvelled at the people’s unbelief.
1 He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
