The answer to the question in Nahum 1:6 is: no one. No individual, no nation can face the Lord's powerful judgment described in Nahum 1:3–5 and survive. His anger is like a volcano—it is like liquid fire that consumes everything in its path. It shatters boulders and a shattered boulder cannot be put back together.1 The Lord’s judgment is final and comprehensive.
The gospel does not remove or reduce this terrifying judgment. Rather, through the atoning death of Christ, the Lord has provided a way to survive it, if we find refuge in Christ and in his death on our place. On the cross this terrifying death is poured out onto Christ so that all those who are found in him through faith will be able to stand on the final Day of Judgment.
5 The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.
