  2. Exposition

When did Isaiah receive this prophecy?

Isaiah 20:1 (ESV)

1 In the year that the commander in chief, who was sent by Sargon the king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and fought against it and captured it

The historical background of this chapter can also be found in Assyrian writings, and archaeological findings confirm the details. In 713 BC, Ashdod rebelled against Assyria. At this time, Sargon II was reigning in Assyria. The Assyrian army reacted, and King Azuri of Ashdod was replaced on the throne by his brother Achmit.

The people of Ashdod deposed Achmit and replaced him with Jaman, probably with the support of Shabako, king of Egypt and Cush (Nubia). Other cities of Philistia participated in the revolt, and Edom, Moab, and Judah were also invited to join in.

After this second revolt, the Assyrian commander in chief, an important officer of the state who acted on behalf of the king, was sent in 711 BC to capture Ashdod. Jaman fled to Egypt for help but was handed over to the Assyrians. The capture of Ashdod was an important prelude for the Assyrians to take over Egypt.

Isaiah received his command three years before the Assyrians took over Ashdod. In other words, when the Philistine rebellion took place, God already gave Isaiah these instructions.
