1. Malachi 4:5–6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is significant about the mentioning of both Moses and Elijah in Malachi 4:5–6?

Malachi 4:5–6 (ESV)

5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.

Moses was the prophet that the Lord used in the formation of his covenant people, Israel. Elijah was the prophet that the Lord used in the reformation of his covenant people. Both figures also appear together at the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3–4). By referring to these two key figures in Israel’s history, the Lord indicated that he was to bring about a great restoration, a great revival amongst his people.
