How does Malachi's presentation of "Elijah" fit in with Scripture's teaching that Christ is Lord?

Malachi 4:5 (ESV)

5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.

In Malachi 4:4–6 we see that Elijah is the forerunner of the Lord. From the Gospels we learn that John the Baptist is this Elijah (Matthew 17:12–13). John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ Jesus, preparing the way for him (Luke 1:17, Luke 1:76). Comparing what is written in Malachi to the fulfilment in the Gospels, one can only come to one conclusion, that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Son of God incarnate.
