The Amalekites are archetypal plunderers in the Bible (cf. Exodus 17:8–16; Numbers 13:29). They were a nomadic tribe who inhabited the desert south of Judah. They opposed Israel’s attempts to enter Canaan from the south (Numbers 14:41–45), and often joined Israel’s enemies in battle (see Judges). Saul won a great victory against them (1 Samuel 15:1–35) and they paid tribute to David (2 Samuel 8:12).1
48 And he did valiantly and struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.
