Psalm 55:23 (ESV)

23 But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

Enmity is a burden which men cannot carry on their own. The author counts on the Lord’s help. The righteous person will not fall. But how different is the fate of the enemies: But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction. Men of blood and deceit will not finish half of their lives. The Lord takes them out of this life prematurely. That is the confession of the author. In a short, powerful sentence he closes off: “I will trust in you.”

The language and the tone here is different than in the beginning. It started with an almost desperate prayer. Now we hear a confession in full force. When you have placed all your troubles on the Lord, you can give yourself in complete trust to the Lord. It can also be the other way around: because you completely trust the Lord, you give him all your troubles. You can entrust yourself to him without concern.
