The attack is against Christ

Matthew 10:21–22 (ESV)

21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,

Through these words Christ shows that this enmity is not about us. So neither should you think you can overcome this hatred with tact and charm, or by appealing to blood ties or love relationships. The hatred is not directed against us. In us, these enemies see Christ. They hate God and his revelation. They want to drive out God and silence his words. Sometimes you will be astounded and amazed at the ugly attitude with which you are so unexpectedly attacked or approached, and you might ask, What have I done to you? Therefore, it is not directed at us, but at the Christ whom we present. People sense and see Christ through us, and they seek to get rid of him in their life.
