Commentary on Genesis 7:13–16 (Summary)

Genesis 7:13–16 (ESV)

13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark,

On the day that the flood rains started, Noah and his family retreated into the ark. All the animals had been brought inside. The time had come that no one would leave the ark for a short while. The time had come that no one could save himself by entering the ark. The time for repentance was over. It is the Lord himself who closed the door of the ark. No one could go in or out anymore. For any of the other people, the time of grace truly came to an end. The same thing will happen when the Lord Jesus returns to earth on the clouds of heaven at the appointed time.

There is another striking point when the Lord himself closed the door of the ark. The entire ark had to be daubed with pitch inside and outside to ensure that it was watertight. In his way, the Lord ensured that the seams at the door of the ark would have been watertight and would not have been a danger to the rescued creation on the ark.
