Now the author sketches an image of his adversaries’ behaviour again, and with that he underlines the reason that they deserve to be disciplined by God: sin is the language of their mouths, the language of their lips. What they say is drenched in sin. It makes the author suffer, as someone who lives close to the Lord (Psalm 59:3b, Psalm 59:4a). Then he asks: let them suffocate in their pride. Let them get caught up in their pride. The pride becomes visible in their cursing and their lies. The author suffers from this. But of course, not only him. Their language firstly goes against the Lord and his Word. Sin also contains a terrible dynamic (Romans 1:21–25). Pride, cursing, lies, and threats stand over against what God gives: blessings, truth, peace, and righteousness.
12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies that they utter,
