In Hebrew, the words donkey
and heap
sound very similar. So to make the English capture the sense of the Hebrew poetry, the Moffatt Translation renders the first part of the poem as, With the jawbone of an ass I have piled them in a mass!
Samson slaughtered these 1,000 Philistines and made a heap out of them!
16 And Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of a donkey have I struck down a thousand men.”
