Proverbs 13:7 (ESV)

7 One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

To pretend is to seek to impress others about your life but in reality, it is not a true reflection of who you really are. Living a life of pretence is hypocrisy. A man who pretends to be rich thinks and acts as if he possesses great wealth. He portrays himself as someone who has much riches when in fact, he does not own anything of material value. He is hiding himself behind the mask of being materially wealthy therefore he is living a lie. A man who lives his life behaving and acting as if he is poor when in fact he has great wealth is also living a lie. He is living behind the mask of poverty and displays being poor possibly because he has no intention of sharing his wealth with others who are in need.
