Saul already knew David to be a competent harpist. He elevated him to be his armour-bearer, so that he could make continued use of his services. He did not, however, speak extensively with David or inquire about his family.1 David was simply a servant to the king and the previous request for his services from Jesse was left in the hands of one of his officers.2 Now, however, he was eager to find out more about David. Especially in light of the promises that have been made regarding his daughter and tax exemption (1 Samuel 17:25).3 He needed details of David’s family to fulfill his commitments.4
55 As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”
