Why did Saul eye David?

1 Samuel 18:9 (ESV)

9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.

Saul wanted the people to think well of him. He wanted to be sure of their support. Following David’s rise to fame, he became jealous of the love that the people had for Israel’s champion.1 Quite possibly, he also began to suspect that David was the person chosen by the Lord to replace him (see 1 Samuel 15:28).2
