1 Kings 1:15 (ESV)

15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his chamber (now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king).

Bathsheba did as she was advised and went into the king’s chamber. This was most probably David’s bedchamber. The Hebrew root word, “cheder,” often means private chamber as in a bedchamber. The probability is increased by the information that Abishag the Shunammite was there performing her service to the king, and we have been informed that the service she was chosen for was to lie beside the king in his bed.

By stating the particular place of the conversation and the presence of the young virgin, the writer reminds us of the circumstances of David’s life. He was very old, and he experienced a problem of old age that required the service of Abishag. Such a reminder impresses upon us that there was the necessity of Bathsheba and Nathan to encourage the king to rise to a state of greater activity.
